COMMEMORATIVE TREE PROJECT
In order to raise funds to maintain Isle Martin for the pleasure of local people and visitors the Trust’s board have decided to establish a Commemorative Tree Plantation Project on the western side of the island. The first oak was recently planted to commemorate the life of an Ullapool resident and also the marriage of his daughter. The board hope that more people will want to celebrate a life, a marriage, a birth or a particular event of significance to them. What better way to remember someone special than to plant a tree on this beautiful island in their name? The opportunity is open not just to Trust members and people with a past association with the island but to anyone who wishes to commemorate a life or an event in this way. For a one-off payment of £250 the Trust will arrange to plant a tree of choice (birch, rowan, willow, aspen, oak, hazel or ash), arrange to have a weather-proof plaque engraved and erected in front of the tree, and nurture and look after the tree for years to come. All trees used in this project are native species grown from local seed sources. Isle Martin is a beautiful, secluded spiritual island with a wonderful atmosphere of calm and peace. The Trust needs to raise funds for the upkeep of the island, the houses and ferry, and to continue to make it accessible to future generations. Further information can be had either by writing to Isle Martin Trust, c/o Macleods w.s. Solicitors, 26 Argyle Street, Ullapool IV26 2UB, phoning board members Sheila Didcock (01854 612937) or Joan Michael (01854 612036) or by e-mailing islemartin@lochbroom.freeserve.co.uk. The pontoon arrived at Isle Martin on Saturday 14 April 2007 and will be available for use when the Summer Queen carries passengers to the island for the Ullapool Book Festival Poetry Reading event scheduled, weather permitting, for Friday May 11. The Board of the Isle Martin Trust are extremely grateful to the Scottish Land Fund, Highlands & Islands Enterprise, West Ross Alliance, the Crown Commissioner's Marine Stewardship Fund, the Hugh Fraser Foundation and Councillor Jean Urquhart for all their help with this project. Special thanks go to Laura Talbot for months of letter writing and application form-filling which has culminated in this giant step forward for the island. The Board is grateful to Hugh Richards for sending us this photo and capturing a special moment in the life of Isle Martin - definitely in the right place at the right time...! Thanks Hugh..! The pontoon will enable larger vessels to land visitors and it also means that the Trust's own small ferry, the Catriona Rose will be able to land at any time and not be dependent on the state of the tide. |

Isle Martin
is situated at the mouth of Loch Broom, some three miles north-west of Ullapool in Wester Ross. The nearest mainland is less than a mile away at Ardmair. This strategic location has been important in both the commercial and cultural history of the island. It is approx. 400 acres in size and lies below the towering cliffs of Beinn Mhor Coigach and opposite the ancient Viking Fort of Dun Canna. Beyond the island are the Summer Isles - a group of islands which lie off Achiltibuie on the beautiful Coigach Peninsular.
The Isle Martin Trust, a registered charity, was established in May 1999 as guardian of the island on behalf of the communities of Loch Broom and Coigach. The island, gifted to the communities by the RSPB , is presently uninhabited.
The aims and objectives of the Isle Martin Trust are:
|
To maintain and develop Isle Martin as an important part of the local natural, cultural and human heritage, through a broadly based partnership of local interest, by: |
|
Regenerating the quality and diversity of the natural heritage of the island |
|
Developing the educational, cultural, human and recreational potential of the island as an important local and national resource |
|
Identifying opportunities for sustainable economic activity in so far as it is consistent with conserving the natural habitat and wildlife interest of the island and the Trust's charitable status |
|
Encouraging and ensuring open access to the island |
To meet these objectives, the Trust needs the support of the community, who by annual or life subscription may become members, and those friends who may live outwith the area but have a special affection and concern for Isle Martin, Ullapool and Loch Broom.
